Elina Arpalahti’s work has abstract and minimalistic accent. Her work is relatively small in physical stature and is somewhat intimate. She is interested in shapes, colors and forms that she sees. Her usual working practice begins by going someplace new and seeing something that interests her in observable language. In painting she expresses a crossover of her experiences, visual memory, thoughts and feelings. The subject of her paintings in recent years has been ghostly lines which seem to grow out of nowhere. The surface of the paintings is sometimes cracked, and super dry. The materials that she uses most frequently in her work are pigments and gum acacia, also acrylics and oil paint. Her process with preparing paint starts at the very beginning. Grinding powder pigments and binder together in a circular motion on glass surface creating a paste. “It’s often quite an intuitive decision which colours I end up working with. I don’t have favourite colors, I like mixing them.” says the artist.
